Brick calculator
The number of bricks depends on the wall area and its thickness: a half-brick wall uses about 53 bricks per m², a one-brick wall about twice as many. The calculator deducts openings and adds waste for breakages and cuts.

Result
- Net wall area
- 13.60 m²
- Area to order (incl. waste)
- 14.28 m²
- Bricks needed
- 1,571 pcs
For solid bricks of 240 × 115 × 63 mm with ~1 cm joints. Other formats: use the count per m² from the manufacturer.
How the calculation works
- Net area = total wall length × height, minus door and window openings.
- Area to order = net area + 5% waste (10% for walls with many corners or openings).
- Bricks = area to order × bricks per m² for the chosen thickness: ~53 at 12.5 cm, ~110 at 25 cm, ~165 at 37.5 cm.
Worked example
A 6 × 2.6 m wall with 2 m² of openings is 13.6 m²; with 5% waste, 14.28 m². A 25 cm (one-brick) wall needs 14.28 × 110 = 1,571 bricks.
What the calculator assumes
- The values are for solid bricks of 240 × 115 × 63 mm with joints of about 1 cm (53 per m² for a 12.5 cm wall, about 444 per m³ of masonry).
- Waste covers bricks broken in transport and those cut at corners and openings.
When to adjust the result
- Brick formats differ between countries (for example 240 × 115 × 71 mm, or US modular bricks) — use the count per m² from the manufacturer.
- Large perforated clay blocks need far fewer pieces, typically 10–16 per m².
- Mortar is not included — see the mortar calculator.
Planning a brick wall
Plan heights and lengths in brick sizes (for example 75 mm courses with a 10 mm joint for metric bricks) to avoid awkward cut courses at windows and the top of the wall. Set the first course on a level mortar bed and use gauge rods or a line so courses stay straight.
Load-bearing walls need the brick type and strength from the structural design, a damp-proof course near the base, and lintels over openings. For facing work, mix bricks from several packs as you lay so colour variations blend.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks in a square metre of wall?
For 240 × 115 × 63 mm bricks with 1 cm joints: about 53 for a half-brick (12.5 cm) wall and about 110 for a one-brick (25 cm) wall.
How much extra should I order?
About 5% for simple walls and 10% for walls with many corners and openings.
How many bricks per m² of wall?
About 60 standard bricks per m² for a single-skin wall with 10 mm joints; large-format blocks need far fewer.
Why mix bricks from different packs?
Colour varies within a delivery; mixing as you lay avoids visible bands of different shades.
