Fence calculator

A fence is posts plus infill. The number of posts follows from the length and the spacing — with one extra post at the end — and the infill from length × height.

45.0 m²

For one straight run. Corners and gates need extra, usually heavier posts.

How the calculation works

  1. Posts = fence length ÷ post spacing, rounded up, plus one end post.
  2. Mesh or panel area = length × height.

Worked example

For 30 m of fence 1.5 m high with posts every 2.5 m: 30 ÷ 2.5 = 12 bays, so 13 posts, and 30 × 1.5 = 45 m² of mesh or panels.

What the calculator assumes

  • Post spacing depends on the fence: 2.5 m for rigid welded panels, 2–3 m for chain-link on tension wire.
  • The calculation is for one straight run.

When to adjust the result

  • Every corner and gate needs extra posts, usually heavier and braced.
  • Clips, tension wire, concrete for the post footings and the gate are not included.
  • Fence height on a boundary may be limited by local planning rules.

Setting fence posts properly

A fence is only as straight and strong as its posts. Bury about a third of the post length in the ground (at least 60 cm for a typical 1.8 m fence), set it in concrete or compacted gravel, and slope the concrete top away from the post so water does not collect at the base.

Run a string line between the end posts before digging the others, and check every post for plumb in two directions. In windy, exposed spots, reduce post spacing or choose panels with gaps that let wind through. Before you start, confirm exactly where the boundary is and check local rules on fence height.

Frequently asked questions

How many fence posts do I need?

Length divided by the post spacing, rounded up, plus one — then add posts for corners and gates.

How far apart should fence posts be?

Typically 2–3 m; rigid panels set the spacing (often 2.5 m).

How deep should fence posts be?

About one third of the post length below ground; at least 60 cm for a 1.8 m fence, deeper in soft soil or exposed sites.

How far apart are fence posts?

Panel fences use the panel width (often about 1.8 m); post-and-wire or slatted fences typically use 2–3 m spacing.
