In short
- A freestanding fridge-freezer is usually 60 cm wide, 60–68 cm deep and 170–205 cm tall.
- Side-by-side models are about 90 cm wide and 70–75 cm deep.
- Integrated models are chosen by niche height; leave ventilation space and check the door swing.
Dimensions by type
These are market ranges — exact sizes with and without handles are on each product's data sheet.
- Under-counter: about 60 cm wide, 82–85 cm tall.
- Freestanding fridge-freezer (freezer at the bottom): 60 cm wide, 170–205 cm tall, 60–68 cm deep; 70 cm-wide versions exist.
- Top-freezer: usually 55–70 cm wide, 140–175 cm tall.
- Side-by-side and multi-door: about 90–92 cm wide, 178–180 cm tall, 70–75 cm deep without handles.
- Integrated: niche about 56–57 cm wide and 55 cm deep; common niche heights about 88, 102, 122, 140, 158 and 178 cm.
Depth: why the fridge sticks out
Kitchen units are about 60 cm deep with doors. A 65–68 cm fridge plus handles and wall clearance protrudes 8–12 cm beyond the worktop. For a flush look, choose counter-depth or integrated models.
Space for ventilation and doors
- Ventilation: the compressor rejects heat; without clearance at the back and top, consumption rises and it wears faster. Minimum gaps are in the manual.
- Door swing: next to a wall the door must open beyond 90° to pull out drawers. Some models have zero-clearance hinges.
- Door direction is reversible on most fridge-freezers — check before delivery.
Getting it into the kitchen
Measure the narrowest point on the route — the front door, the kitchen door, a tight turn in the hall. Depth without doors and handles is usually the critical dimension for side-by-side models.
Frequently asked questions
How much space should I leave around a fridge?
What the manual specifies — usually a few centimetres at the sides and back and free space above for heat to escape. Next to a wall, also allow room for the door to open far enough to pull out the drawers.
Will a side-by-side fridge fit through my door?
Measure the narrowest point on the route. Depth without doors and handles is usually the critical dimension; many side-by-side models only fit with the doors removed.
