- Plants = hedge length ÷ planting distance, rounded up, plus one at the end.

For a 20 m hedge with plants every 50 cm: 20 ÷ 0.5 = 40 gaps, so 41 plants.
What the calculator assumes
- 30–50 cm is usual for young thuja, privet or yew; laurel and larger species are planted 70–100 cm apart.
When to adjust the result
- For a very dense hedge plant two staggered rows — double the number.
- Distance from the boundary and maximum height may be regulated locally.
Planting a hedge that fills in
Spacing decides how fast the hedge closes, not just how many plants you buy. Dense spacing (3–4 plants per metre, or a staggered double row) gives a screen in two or three seasons; wide spacing is cheaper but leaves gaps for years. Fast growers such as privet or laurel tolerate wider spacing than slow ones such as yew or box.
Prepare a strip about 60 cm wide rather than individual holes: loosen the soil a spade deep, mix in compost and water the trench before planting. Bare-root plants go in during autumn or early spring when dormant; container plants can go in most of the year if you water through the first summer. Trim the tops lightly after planting so the plants branch from the base.
