In short
- Check the batch or shade code on every box before opening any.
- Mixed batches look fine piece by piece and show as a line on a large surface.
- If batches are mixed, contact the supplier before laying, not after.
The batch code, not just the product name
Every pack of tiles, flooring or paint usually carries a batch code (sometimes called 'shade' or 'lot') printed discreetly on the label or box. Checking that code on every box received, before opening them, is the only sure way to confirm the whole order comes from the same production run — an identical product name doesn't automatically guarantee an identical batch.
Why different batches cause visible problems
Shade or texture variations between batches of the same product are often subtle on a single piece but become obvious on a large, continuous surface, especially in direct daylight. A difference you thought negligible on one box can become a visible line exactly where one batch meets the next.
What to do if you find mixed batches
If the check shows boxes from different batches, the safest step is to contact the supplier before laying, not after — a return or correct replacement is much simpler while the material is still uninstalled. If the difference is only noticed after partial installation, separating batches into less visible areas (corners, behind furniture) can limit the visual impact, though it remains a compromise rather than a solution.
Check quantity and condition in the same step
Along with the batch, the delivery check should include counting the boxes or rolls against the order and a quick look at the packaging for transport damage. Both take a few minutes and prevent discovering a shortfall or damage only on installation day, when putting it right is much harder.
